Capitol Corner | September 2024
As of this writing, the California Legislature is days away from completing its 2023-24 two-year legislative session. Both the State Assembly and the State Senate are engaged in marathon floor sessions and selected policy and fiscal committee meetings as necessary to complete their work for the year. Upon the Legislature’s adjournment sine die at 12:00 midnight on Saturday, August 31, legislators will return to their districts to serve their constituents and concentrate on the upcoming November General Election.
During the first month of that district work period, Governor Newsom will have until midnight on Monday, September 30 to consider and sign or veto a myriad of legislative proposals sent to his desk in the final days of the legislative session. Please watch your email inboxes for Action Alerts from CAHSAH requesting you to contact the Governor to urge him to sign or veto legislation impacting our industry.
The time legislators spend in their districts this fall also present us with a golden opportunity for home health, home care, and hospice provider agencies to interact with their elected legislative representatives and candidates for these offices to share with them who we are, what we do, and how we provide care for their constituents in the comfort, safety, security, and familiarity of their homes across our state. Invite a legislator or candidate to a home care, home health, or hospice visit in their district, attend a legislator’s town hall or other constituent meeting, request a meeting with your legislator and their staff to talk about the importance of home care and hospice in their community, or volunteer in a legislative campaign. Or better yet, do all of those things and make a campaign contribution while you’re at it! We all have a clear responsibility to share with our elected officials and other policy makers our policy priorities and desires. Please contact CAHSAH’s staff prior to meeting with legislators, staff, and candidates so we can share with you the latest legislative priorities of our industry. We thank you in advance for your advocacy on behalf of our industry and our association. Together, we can make a difference for our agencies, caregivers, patients, and clients!
